Did Damon break the sire bond between him and Elena?

The Vampire Diaries is one show that loves its loopholes, and it seems Damon (Ian Somerhalder) found one with Elena’s (Nina Dobrev) sire bond in Season 4, Episode 9, “O Come All Ye Faithful.”

“You’re going to go home,” he tells her, saying he’ll stay and help Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) work on his hunting skills. “I’m setting you free, Elena.” Later, before she gets in the car to leave, Elena kisses Damon. Whoa. What was that?

“Damon’s choice of words was really indicative of what he wants in this moment,” executive producer Julie Plec tells TVLine. “He could have set her free and said, ‘Never see me again, never talk to me again, never think of me again.’” Instead, the two are going to be in two different places, pining for each other.

“Until the sire bond fundamentally doesn’t exist — which as long as Elena’s a vampire, it seems to be that’s going to be in play,” Plec says, we won’t really know if Elena’s feelings are real or a by-product of Damon’s blood.
Of course, for Elena, the feelings are very real. She just has to prove it to Damon.
